Swimming Pool Maintenance

How Often Should a Hotel Swimming Pool Be Serviced?

Daily, weekly and seasonal pool maintenance for hotels, riads and villas in Morocco — water testing, cleaning, filtration, equipment and leak checks.

Published · 2 min read

There is no single number of visits that suits every pool. A small plunge pool in a riad courtyard and a large resort pool in Agadir have very different needs. What they share is that water quality can change quickly in heat and sun, and that problems are much easier to prevent than to fix.

Here is a practical framework for hospitality pools. Always follow the instructions of your equipment manufacturers and any local regulations that apply to pools open to guests.

Daily

For any pool used by guests, some tasks need doing every day — often more than once in high season:

  • Test the water. Check disinfectant level and pH, and record the results. Pool professionals commonly aim to keep pH slightly alkaline, typically in the 7.2–7.6 range, because it keeps disinfectant effective and is comfortable for swimmers. Your treatment system and supplier will specify the targets for your pool.
  • Skim the surface and empty skimmer baskets.
  • Check the equipment is running: pump, filter and any automatic dosing.
  • Look at the water: it should be clear enough to see the bottom easily. Cloudy or green water needs attention immediately.

Several times a week

  • Brush walls, steps and waterline to prevent algae and deposits.
  • Vacuum the floor, especially after wind, dust or heavy use.
  • Check the pump strainer basket.
  • Check the water level. Evaporation is normal in Moroccan summers, but note how much you top up.

Weekly to monthly

  • Backwash or clean the filter according to the pressure gauge and the manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Inspect the pump for noise, leaks and overheating.
  • Check the electrical supply and controls for the pool equipment. Water and electricity together demand care; this work should be done by a qualified person.
  • Check fittings and lights for damage.

Seasonally

  • Before the high season: a full equipment service, filter media check, and repairs to tiles, grout and coping.
  • After storms or sandstorms: extra cleaning and filter attention.
  • If the pool is closed for part of the year: follow a proper winterisation or reduced-operation routine rather than simply turning everything off.

Is my pool leaking?

Some water loss is normal through evaporation and splashing. A steady drop beyond that may indicate a leak. A simple check is the bucket test: place a bucket of water on the pool step, mark the water level inside and outside the bucket, and compare after a day with the pump running normally. If the pool loses noticeably more than the bucket, it is worth investigating the shell, fittings and pipework.

Who should do it?

Daily testing and skimming can be done by trained staff on site. Equipment servicing, water problems that don’t respond to routine treatment, leak investigation and electrical work are better handled by specialists.
